In a long weekend of basketball, the boys went 1-3 and the girls went 0-4 against Craig and Petersburg.

On Thursday, the girls and boys teams both fell to Craig. The girls lost 18-55. The boys went neck and neck with Craig. With 23 seconds left in the game and the Bears down by 3 with possession of the ball, the Panthers stole a pass and made a fast-break layup. Kirby Faverty hit a buzzer-beating three-point shot, but it was not enough and the Bears lost 67-70.

The boys came back with a vengeance Friday night and dominated throughout the competition. They defeated the Panthers 82-44. Although they scored a few more points, the Lady Bears again fell to Craig and lost 26-59.

On Saturday, the girls and boys headed to Mitkof Island to face the Petersburg Vikings. The boys were down by five at the half, but the Vikings extended their lead and defeated the Bears 63-45.

On Sunday night the Bears put up more of a fight. In the fourth quarter they were down 11 but came back after Faverty sunk two long three-point shots. Carson Crager stole an inbound pass and scored. The Bears again stole and later converted at the free throw line. It didn’t end up being enough. With the Bears down by six, the Vikings regained the momentum and won 67-59.

Faverty averaged 28.5 points per game. “What’s really exciting for us is that he’s averaging nine points in the fourth quarter,” head coach Steve Fossman said. “He’s putting up even scoring throughout the whole game.”

The girls lost Saturday and Sunday nights, 20-55 and 25-67, respectively.

The boys and girls have an off week this weekend.
