The Haines Glacier Bards placed in the majority of their performances at their third tournament of the year in Mount Edgecumbe on Nov. 30 and Dec.1.

Stella Ordonez and Haley Boron placed in every event they performed. Boron placed second with an informative speech about the history of the popular video game Legend of Zelda. “It was really, really great,” coach Hannah Bochart said.

Max White and Tanna Dixon took home fourth place with a duet that has placed in every tournament they’ve competed in this year. Ordonez and Boron took home third place in the same category with a piece called “The Shot.”

The piece features a young woman who’s “psychotically afraid” of receiving a shot, Bochart said. The nurse who at first remains calm is slowly driven insane by the ordeal, and the tables are turned when the nurse loses her mind.

Eli Williamson took home fourth place with a dramatic interpretation of the Johnny Cash song “Ragged Old Flag” that featured an old man telling a younger man about the history of the American flag and the wars the country has been through. It was his first placement with the piece. “He made it more personal,” Bochart said. “He incorporated a lot more symbolic blocking and a little bit more crescendo with emotion. It was pretty impressive for him not only to take fourth with a very uncommon piece, but also one that’s more subtle and subdued.”

Dixon and Ordonez placed second with an original mime piece that Dixon performed in the past with her brother Kai Dixon.

The students will head to Ketchikan on Jan. 25 for their last tournament before the state championship in February. The Bards need to raise $5,000 by that time to pay for their travel expenses. Bochart said they are planning fundraisers to help pay for the trip.
