The Haines Borough Assembly is being asked right now to commit to adding new assembly chambers to the public library building. The initial cost estimate of the project is $400,000, plus $30,000 for design. At its Nov. 6 and Dec. 4 meetings, the assembly will consider an ordinance to spend $30,000 for design. There has been very little public discussion of this project. If you support or oppose it, please contact me (766-3775 or 303-2688) or other assembly members or testify at the upcoming assembly meetings. As your representative on the assembly, my current position is that existing chambers are inadequate, but taxpayers may not agree with this expenditure or they may have other priorities for spending this money. I look forward to the public’s direction on this matter. Please make your wishes known.
