The assembly unanimously selected the public safety building proposal among the three contestants for the Community Development Block Grant fund. The CDBG is administered and determined by the Division of Community and Regional Affairs to serve an Alaskan community on issues related to health and safety. The two other proposals from the Haines Borough were to install elevators and handicapped restrooms in the Haines Sheldon Museum, and to construct a carport for the Haines Senior Village.
This is the second year the public safety building, encompassing the fire department, police department, office spaces, and assembly chambers, is applying for the fund. The assembly plans to match the fund for a total cost of about $1 million.
