Haines high school sent 12 students to the Southeast Alaska Honor Festival in Petersburg this week.
The festival gathers outstanding student musicians from across Southeast, said music teacher Matt Davis, where they assemble into bands and choirs directed by experienced directors.
Dr. Sean Burton directed the choir, accompanied by Petersburg teacher Jo Ann Day. Songs included a spiritual, “Didn’t My Lord Deliver,” and a gospel, “Let Everything That Hath Breath.”
“The kids really loved the Daniel Spiritual and the gospel piece,” Davis said.
Yzella Miramontes’ piano solo, “The Seal Lullaby,” with the Honor Band was the highlight of the festival, Davis said.
Haley Boron, Lydia Andriesen, Yzella Miramontes played trumpet, bass clarinet and piano respectively. Raine Winge, Hannah Boron, Tanna Dixon, Natalie Jobbins, Mark Davis, Kamakana Kanahele, Steven Galinski, Nathan Haas and Brennan Palmieri sang in the choir.
