Another resident is eyeing an open seat on the Haines Borough Assembly for this October’s municipal election.
Paul Rogers is still gathering signatures before he officially files for candidacy.
Rogers, a Mosquito Lake resident, became more involved in local politics when the assembly began debating the merits of borough-wide policing. The assembly later appointed him to the public safety commission.
Rogers has advocated for limited police service outside the townsite rather than a borough-wide police service area.
Rogers was a police officer for 16 years and a 911 director for a county-wide dispatch operation for 15 years. “I have been attending Haines Borough meetings for over a year now and believe that I have a good perspective on the issues being considered by the borough,” Rogers wrote in a statement declaring his candidacy. “My education and work history have given me the experience needed to collaborate with differing interests and points of view and to build consensus.”
Commercial gillnetter Will Prisciandaro filed for candidacy last week. Prisciandaro serves on the Upper Lynn Canal Fish and Game Advisory Committee, United Southeast Alaska Gillnet Board and the Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association.
Assembly member Sean Maidy has also filed to retain his seat. The assembly appointed Maidy to fill a seat vacated by Margaret Friedenauer last year. Voters elected him to fill the remainder of the term in October.
The deadline to file for candidacy is Aug. 20. A detailed story on candidate’s positions will appear in a future edition of the CVN.
