I was taken aback when I read and felt my own negative tone in part of my quote from last week’s Duly Noted. I hope you’ll cut me some slack, knowing that I’m not always all about love, harmony and beauty, though I certainly attempt to be that most of the time. The memorial for Suki is about honoring my dog, including what we had in this town. Haines embraced us in a way that Fairbanks, where we came from, never could have. This place is smaller and us walking everywhere together resulted in people knowing us whom we did not know. It turned out to be a very sweet phenomenon.
The memorial and street party is for all of us. We’ll leave our contentious issues at home and mix and mingle around dogs for a couple of hours. Everyone is welcome, I hope you feel invited, whoever comes is all good, there’s no test to see who shows up.
Suki was 13, we were together 10 years. Except for my birth family and my own kids, that’s the longest I’ve ever lived with another heartbeat. Seven years at 22 Deishu is the longest I’ve ever lived in one spot in my adult life. I had a block party for my 30th, now’s the time for another.
Saturday, May 19, 3-5 p.m., lower Deishu Drive. Fingers crossed for just the right weather. A slideshow, printed photos to look at, some locally made treats even for dogs are planned. Thank you.
