The Haines Drama, Debate, and Forensics team competed against teams from Skagway, Thunder Mountain, Wrangell, Ketchikan and Mount Edgecombe in their second meet of the season last weekend in Skagway.
Junior Sheeshao “Max” White and freshman Eli Williamson performed a duo. Sophomore Tanna Dixon placed fourth out of six in the first performance. None of the students placed in the finals.
Dixon said that could be the result of nerves and differences in the competitions “because the first meet we get to have scripts, but the second meet we have to be one hundred percent memorized (on the pieces). It was easier, I think, (in the last meet) because I had another person there with me to help calm my nerves.”
White and Williamson were startled at not having an extra week to memorize their lines and frantically crammed a week’s worth of work on the boat. They agreed that their greatest pride was in their ability to have developed the piece further in what little time they had.
Assistant Coach Marley Horner said he was confident that the Bears would place in the finals at their next meet.
“Watching everyone progress from just the last few weeks has been awesome, even just the progress from getting up there and doing some of these pieces for the first time. Max and Eli’s duo really came together this weekend and, although they’ve still got a lot of work to do it’s made a lot of progress,” said Horner.
The Haines DDF Team will perform at Mount Edgecumbe High School on December 8.
