Haines police have charged a man who allegedly crashed his car into a Delta Western truck and left the scene without reporting the accident last July, despite causing more than $10,000 in damage.
Officer Josh Dryden found debris and gouge marks in the Tesoro parking lot, which led down Sawmill Road, according to charging documents.
Dryden collected a fully intact front headlight and a side mirror from the suspected vehicle. He later matched it to a damaged SUV.
Dryden contacted the driver and noticed his vehicle had extensive front-end damage along with a missing mirror and headlight.
Police interviewed a witness who said they saw the man drinking in his vehicle outside of a bar between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. the morning of the accident.
The suspect told police he didn’t know why his vehicle was damaged, but that he “woke up to find the damaged (vehicle) and that he moved it to its current location,” charging documents state.
The man is being charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
Damage to the Delta Western truck is estimated at $10,848.
