A thief has raided the Chilkat Restaurant & Bakery’s flower beds, according to owner Miki Atkins.

Atkins said she noticed her snapdragons weren’t growing earlier this summer and asked her gardener why her flowers weren’t coming up yet this summer. “He said, ‘You didn’t know someone cut our flowers?’” Atkins said.

Atkins said she thought about calling the police but decided against it. She later saw the snapdragon thief with her own eyes.

A few weeks ago around 5:30 a.m. Atkins was opening the bakery and saw a woman walking up to her restaurant.

“I said ‘Wow the customer is coming too early. Maybe she didn’t’ know our hours.’ Then she stopped. She didn’t come in here. She just went to the flowers, and twisted them out and walked off.”

The woman took between three or four snapdragons and walked quickly back to her car, which was parked behind Miles Furniture, Atkins said.

Atikins said she had long hair and drove an orange, Toyota Rav 4.

Haines dispatcher Celeste Grimes said the police department has received calls for vandalism associated with flower beds, but never calls about people stealing their flowers.
