A couple months ago I was asked to sign the recall petition. I declined. I kept remembering the last recall we had years ago and how that divided the community with lingering animosities that lasted for years. I also reflected on the comments from several people including the Mayor, some assembly and board members as to the “mean spirit” that can rise up in Haines. I hope this recall isn’t mean spirited or bullying in nature. I know several of the petitioners and they certainly don’t seem that way.
I’m afraid, however, to a large segment of the population that it is being viewed that way. We don’t allow this type of behavior in our children. It is my sincere hope that our adults aren’t displaying it as well. The three individuals we will be voting on are decent contributing members of our community who have given of themselves to serve. I hope some of the petitioners for the recall will put themselves on boards and try to help in a positive manner. We certainly need help with the complex issues facing our community. I’ll be voting “No” on the recall.
