Participation continues to grow for the Haines Borough hazardous household waste collection.
The public works department in conjunction with Carson Dorn, Inc. of Juneau hosted the collection at the new public works shop on Union Street July 21 and 22.
Carson Dorn’s Steve Haavig said overall participation was up from last year.
“Early Saturday morning was slow but built up through the day. The gates were closed at 1:00 p.m. to clean up as the drums and cartons were full. Even with the extra half-day there were customers who showed up after the closing to drop off waste,” Haavig said in a report to manager Debra Schnabel.
Fifteen and a half 55-gallon drums and six 1,000-pound waste filled cartons were shipped Monday to a disposal company in Seattle. One and a half drums of used antifreeze came from Chilkat Guides.
The report stated about 375 additional gallons of used oil were collected but not shipped, as well as about 125 lead acid batteries were collected and prepared for shipment through Bigfoot Auto.
Other waste was stored in a hazmat container until enough is collected to economically ship it out.
Haines crew Will Hickman, Andus Hale, Kyle Klinger and John Spencer received a training certificate for completing four hours of field training in “Safe Physical and Chemical Segregation of Household Hazardous Waste and Basic Emergency Response.”
