The Haines Borough will host a free household hazardous waste collection Friday, July 21 and Saturday, July 22 for the second year at the new public works shop.
After a toxic can exploded at the landfill in May, sending workers to the clinic and closing the facility for several days, Community Waste Solutions encouraged residents to educate themselves on what can and cannot be thrown away.
CWS spokesperson Sally Garton said that after the incident products that read “caution,” “danger” or “warning” should be disposed of at the hazardous waste collection.
The borough hosts the event once a year, but the Solid Waste Working Group discussed in June the possibility of adding a second collection date.
An event flier states “Poisons, disinfectants, solvents, herbicides, used oil, flammable liquids (gasoline, diesel fuel, Blazo, etc.), paint products, paint thinner, furniture stripper, antifreeze, acids, cleaners, pesticides, transmission fluid, wood preservatives, floor wax, printing and photographic chemicals, Ni-Cad and lithium batteries, auto batteries, and mercury,” are eligible for disposable.
Drop-off at the city shop yard on the north side of Union Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues will take place Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to noon.
