The Haines Borough school board approved two, three-year contracts Monday for certified teachers and classified staff.

The contracts will cost the district about $34,500 more than ones that recently expired, with most of the additional cost from an increased district contribution to health insurance programs, including adding three new options for employees.

The district will pay for 90 percent of insurance costs per employee as opposed to 80 percent in the two-year agreements that expire June 30, superintendent Tony Habra said.

The school board discussed the contracts in executive session Monday for about 30 minutes before voting on them in public.

Habra said the Haines Education Association and negotiating team also agreed on a three-year contract as opposed to a two-year contract to reduce time spent negotiating.

Habra said the new contracts will be available to the public as the district gets necessary signatures.

In other school news, the board extended its Monday meeting Thursday, needing more time in executive session to discuss superintendent Tony Habra’s one-year evaluation.

school board members spent about an hour and a half in executive session, wrapping up at 11 p.m.

Habra started with the district last July. He has a three-year contract, with a first-year salary of $113,000. His contract includes a 1 percent raise each year based on a good evaluation.

The meeting will continue at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the school library.
