Leighton Smith is now milling rough-cut lumber at 6.5 Mile Haines Highway.
Smith said he can cut all dimensions, up to 26 feet long. He cuts spruce, birch, hemlock and cottonwood from trees that are his or yours. He charges 90 cents per board foot.
Smith’s mobile dimension mill also can be moved to a customer’s site. “If you’ve got a deck of logs at your house and I can fit my mill in there, we can work at your site,” he said.
“I bought (the mill) to cut boards for myself, but I’ve got a kid who wants to go to college in a few years, so it’ll help pay for that,” Smith said.
Smith said he can work seven days a week, but customers should call in advance, 314-0547 or 766-3407 to set up an appointment.
Rough-cut lumber is full-dimensional. “I can cut a two-by-four two inches by four inches, but if they want it one-and-a-half by three-and-a-half, I can do that, too.”
Smith said he hopes to add a planer to his operation in the next few years for customers seeking smooth boards and beams. Another mill recently set up at 6.5 Mile is no longer in operation, he said.
