Carol Waldo, who applied for Haines’ first marijuana cultivation facility license, also has applied for the borough’s first retail marijuana store license.

She plans to locate the store at 77 Beach Road, across the street from the Port Chilkoot Dock.

Waldo named her business Glacier Bay Farms and applied for a standard marijuana cultivation facility license last month.

Haines residents have 30 days from April 27 to comment on the retail license application before the Haines Borough Assembly considers it for approval. Public notice went out for Waldo’s cultivation license April 13. The assembly must approve both licenses before the state signs off on them.

The Haines Borough currently has no zoning or regulations on marijuana beyond state regulations.

The planning commission took the issue in late April and decided to leave the issue of marijuana zoning and regulation up to the borough assembly.

According to state regulation, a town’s marijuana rules cannot be less restrictive than state law but can be more restrictive.

Current state law bans marijuana establishments from being within 500 feet of a school, youth or recreation center, building where religious services are held or a correctional facility.

Municipalities also have the option to ban the sale, manufacture, cultivation and testing of marijuana.

Waldo has declined to comment on her license applications and business venture until it reaches final approval.
