A “small amount” of prescription painkillers and sedatives were stolen late March 16 or early March 17 during an apparent break-in at the SEARHC medical clinic.
The list of stolen medications includes codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone-acetaminophen, oxycodone-HCL, morphine and fentanyl, along with lorazepam, diazepam, clonazepam, midazolam and chlordiazepoxide, according to Haines Borough police.
Juneau’s SEARHC director of primary care Eric Gettis said the clinic’s pharmacy wasn’t broken into but a small amount of those medicines were stolen from a locked container “elsewhere in the clinic.”
Clinic staff discovered the break-in Friday morning, Gettis said.
He also said the facility has no alarm system but administrators are “actively pursuing increased security measures.”
No information is being released as to how the clinic was broken into. Gettis said that other than to the container where the drugs were kept, there was “no significant damage” to the building or facility.
“There were a few trays thrown on the floor,” Gettis said. “It wasn’t ransacked. It was pretty contained, I think.”
The type of medications that were stolen are accounted for down to an individual pill, Gettis said. In a statement issued by police, the bulk of the medications were in pill form and several others were injectable.
“We are asking that the community speak with their family and friends about the dangers of using any type of controlled substances which are not prescribed to them,” police said in a press release.
The investigation is ongoing. Haines Police Chief Heath Scott said Wednesday afternoon that no further information is available.
