The Haines Glacier Bears track and field team held its first practice of the season March 1. As many as 30 students turned up for the informative meeting that laid out team expectations and goals.
Coach Keri Ewing said he is very excited about the season and looks forward to the continued growth of the program, which is easily the most popular sport in Haines based upon student participation.
“We’re expecting 30 kids this year,” said Ewing, “and with about 80 total kids in the school, that’s pretty great. My goal is to get half the school out there eventually.”
The team last week was practicing with only five students because so many students attended the Region V Basketball Tournament as players, cheerleaders, or members of the student pep band.
Practices with more athletes are expected to get underway early next week.
