In recent years, we have watched as Haines has been successfully promoted (at least so far) as an artists’ community. What kind of artists’ community are we if we allow our school’s musical arts program to flounder? The presence of Main Street galleries, as well as areawide displays, studios, and recurrent arts-related events, supports our growing arts reputation. We also are replete with a variety of performing artists, authors, and, yes, musicians. In light of our surging and hard-earned arts reputation, the recent decision to eliminate our school district’s only music position is unseemly, contradictory and counter-productive.
