Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was observed at Haines School Monday.
Kindergarten teacher Jeanne Kitayama said she broke brown and white eggs, showing students they were identical on the inside.
She also gave an example of descrimination, saying students wearing turquoise-colored shirts would be able to play while all others would be required to write their names over and over.
“Some students were hanging their heads, so we talked about it. I asked, ‘Do you think it was fair?’”
Several other elementary teachers included Dr. King in their lessons plans for the day.
Children’s librarian Holly Davis led songs and stories about civil rights pioneers at the school and public library.
“I feel like our country has come so far,” Davis said in an interview, citing the elections of President Barack Obama.
