A 28-year-old Haines man was arrested Thursday involving a felony assault charge in which the victim was “pistol whipped” and shot at twice from point-blank range.

According to charging documents, Haines Borough police officer Chris Brown responded to a call at about 11 p.m. on Nov. 30.

Brown said he met with the victim at 3 Mile Haines Highway, according to the documents. The victim had multiple head and back injuries and was missing a tooth from the alleged assault, according to Brown’s report. The victim was sent to Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium for treatment.

According to Brown’s account in the documents, the victim was asleep at the assailant’s residence at 1.5 Mile Small Tracts Road when he was awakened by the assailant. The victim was then hit with a revolver, thrown down the stairs, and shot at.

He then got into a vehicle and left the residence.

Police Chief Heath Scott said in a press release alcohol was a factor in the incident.

Brown found blood and two bullet holes, one in a wall and another in a window, at the residence. The assailant was unable to be found that night.

The assailant was arrested on Dec. 1 and was held on $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 9.
