Build your holiday dream home in the Second Annual Gingerbread House Contest.
The competition – which will run Dec. 1 through Dec. 12 – is sponsored by the Alaska Arts Confluence, Haines Chamber of Commerce and Howsers IGA. Stakes are higher this year, with winners poised to take $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place.
Gingerbread houses should be dropped off at the Confluence’s Art on Main Street gallery between noon and 4:30 p.m. Nov. 28 – Dec. 1. Entries will be displayed at the Confluence’s First Friday exhibit from 5 to 7 p.m., as well as in other Main Street storefronts including Skipping Stone Studios, Caroline’s Closet, Talia’s Treasures and the Babbling Book.
Voting will be open through 4 p.m. on Dec. 12, with winners announced Dec. 14.
A new rule is being enforced: structures must be made of gingerbread, but decorative candy and frosting are fair game. Last year, a pretzel log cabin house won first place, but would not qualify in this year’s competition.
Chamber of Commerce office assistant Delayna Doleshal said in a press release that the organizers are hoping to attract more entrants and voters than last year.
“We thought it would be fun for the community and spark the holiday spirit,” Doleshal said “They can see the creations of some of their friends and neighbors when they walk downtown.”
