Chauncey Stigen and Nicole Comer were married last weekend in Brookshire, Texas. The ceremony was held on a 22-acre ranch outside of Houston. Immediate family of Chauncey’s in attendance included sister Caity-Ann Stigen, brothers Chris Stigen and Chad Stigen. Chad’s wife Christina and their daughter Isabella were on hand, as were Chauncey’s parents Greg Stigen and Barb Reeves Stigen of Wasilla. Greg and Barb operated a Main Street pizzeria here in the 1990s.
Staffing changes at KHNS are under way. News director Jillian Rogers is moving to near Banff, B.C. Reporter Emily Files has been promoted to the station’s top news job and Abbey Collins has been hired as reporter. Sara Chapell stepped down as the station’s development director. Former news director Margaret Friedenauer has been hired to the development job.
The Chilkat Center has a new Tai Chi class for beginners starting this week and continuing on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-5 p.m. Call Marilyn Harrold at 816-377-2588 for more information.
Anna Jacobson accepted a job as senior communications coordinator for Vail Resorts in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. She’ll be working primarily with the Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood ski resorts.
Correy Ericksen was featured on Gonzaga University television with mom Mira Ericksen for a “Fall Family Fun” special, recorded live during parent weekend. The show was created by students to let families know what it’s like to be a broadcasting major. Correy is a senior with majors in broadcasting and math. The half-hour segment can be found on Youtube.
The Central Council Tlingit Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska held a client service informational fair at the ANB Hall Tuesday night. The fair was an opportunity for tribal members to learn about services and rules for eligibility. It was one of eight fairs held for communities throughout Southeast.
John and Sharon Svenson left Oct. 5 for Wasilla, where they were to install their new tile mosaic at Redington School. The junior/senior high school opened last fall and is named for Alaska musher Joe Redington. Its team name is the Huskies.
Haines Hiking Club traveled to Chilkat Pass Sunday to get a view of the mountains that source Samuel Glacier. Among hikers were Russ White, Ron Jackson, Diane LaCourse, Anna and Jim Jurgeleit, John Norton, Tom Ganner, and Tom and Liz Heywood.
Giselle Stone is leading “The Tongass Web: Salmon in the Trees,” a week-long, artist-in-schools program at Klukwan School incorporating fish and forest ecology. Using tree-ring rubbings and tissue-paper creations, they’re creating a multi-media art project that will hang from the school ceiling.
Haines students this week participated in annual Fire Prevention Week activities. They included navigating the “smoke room,” and using an escape ladder and fire extinguishers. Students toured the ambulance and had their vitals checked. “They’re all pretty much getting fire truck rides,” said firefighter/EMT Jenn Walsh. An open house from 3-6 p.m. Friday is for all ages. “If you’ve never used a fire extinguisher in your life, it’s a great opportunity to learn.” Walsh and volunteers Jen Talley and Zach Tarleton recently completed a 40-hour technical rope course taught by the Skagway Volunteer Fire Department. The course is part of efforts to revitalize the local search and rescue crew.
