Freshman Marirose Evenden will be Haines’ sole runner at the state cross-country meet in Anchorage on Oct. 1.
She placed 11th in last Saturday’s regional meet in Sitka for the combined Class 1A, 2A and 3A schools. Her time was a personal best of 22:45. The top 15 finishers in each regional contest advance to the state meet.
Freshman Siyel Galindo-George posted the best boys’ time of 18:50, which was a 20th-place finish. Senior Jacob Stigen took 21st with an 18:53.
Coach Keri Ewing said Evenden “is a very determined competitor.” Assistant coach Alixanne Goodman added Evenden worked out with the cross-country team as an eighth-grader in 2015, and practiced more intensely this year. She noted Evenden even practiced diligently when she was recently sick.
