The Alaska Department of Fish and Game will close the subsistence moose hunting season about two weeks early Thursday, Sept. 22, at midnight.
Carl Koch, Fish and Game wildlife biologist, said hunters harvested 24 moose as of Wednesday in the Unit 1D area, which includes the Haines and Skagway region. According to a press release, the management objective for the region was between 20 and 25 bull moose.
About 250 people obtained permits to hunt moose in this area.
