Part of the Haines School gym floor was scraped last week to prepare it to be refinished a second time this year.

Superintendent Tony Habra said he consulted with experts and determined the thick layer of clear-coat finish applied to the floor in early August is not going to completely dry.

“The top had dried as much as it could,” Habra said.

At the Sept. 6 school board meeting, Habra said staff was going to wait to do anything to the floor until new product arrived in Haines, but the undried top layer was already scraped off to allow ample time to sand the floor and prepare it for more product.

The girls’ volleyball team, which started its season Wednesday, will practice in the elementary school gym.

Habra said the floor should be “good to go” in about two weeks.
