Hunting season for mountain goats will close at midnight Thursday for the western shore of the Chilkat Inlet, from the Kicking Horse River to the Sullivan River after one male goat was taken from there on Tuesday.
Based on an Alaska Department of Fish and Game formula that addresses the small number of mountain goats in this sector, the harvest limit in this region is one goat, depending on the gender. This recent ban does not affect the hunting statuses in other portions of the Unit 1D region.
Biologists with the department encourage hunters to target male goats to allow for a higher sustainable harvest. Hunters with questions about goat hunting can contact Carl Koch at the department’s Douglas Area office at 907-465-4329.
