A recent survey of Haines School students and staff reported increases in student delinquent behaviors as well as decreases in peer climate and school leadership.
But some of the study’s findings are comparisons to a 2010 and 2011 survey, and school board president Anne Marie Palmieri said this week it’s too early to draw much from the 2016 School Climate and Connectedness Survey conducted by Alaska Association of School Boards.
“Most of the (student respondents) are different kids. There’s some interpretation we need from AASB,” Palmieri said. “We don’t know what their interpretation is going to be. There may be caveats on that.”
The board is scheduled to meet with AASB’s Jenni Lefing in a workshop to discuss the survey’s findings at 5 p.m. Sept. 22.
To look at the survey results, go to http://www.hbsd.net and search under board packet.
Palmieri said she expected Lefing would provide regional and statewide trends and how the district falls into those patterns. “That’s what we’re looking for. Until we have these figures framed into the bigger picture, they’re just numbers for us.”
One student survey for grades 6-12 and one staff survey were administered in Haines from February through April 2016. A total of 114 Haines students and 24 staff participated.
The 2016 student surveys in Haines ranked above statewide results in parent and community involvement, school safety, caring adults, student delinquent behaviors and student drug and alcohol use. Falling below statewide results were student rankings of student involvement, high expectations and peer climate.
Staff surveys ranked above the statewide results in school safety and student drug and alcohol use; ranking below statewide results were: respectful climate, parent and community involvement, student involvement, school leadership, and involvement and staff attitudes.
The upcoming workshop will start a process toward a district response to the survey, Palmieri said.
“Where do we go from here? We have step one. The administration will decide what changes we make, if any (regarding) what we do with this information and where we go from here.”
