I am the gardener for the Sheldon Museum. I am writing to thank those in our community who appreciate and enjoy our 100-year-old Anway apple tree that graces our museum yard along First Avenue. From the spring months when it blossoms gloriously until autumn when its leaves turn russet and rosy, it is a site to behold. Many years in late summer the museum hosts an apple event where school children can learn about the tree’s history, the harvesting of its fruit, and even the preparation and tasting of its applesauce, right here in the museum yard. If apples permit, we soon will be doing it again this year. To Haines folks who pick up “drops” from the museum lawn, we thank you for helping to keep things tidied up and putting the fallen apples to good use. To those who are tempted to pick from the tree itself, please do not. They need to be picked by people skilled at handling an aged and fragile tree. And, the apples are on reserve for a planned educational event for the children. Thank you for loving our apple tree. Diana Kelm
