Only about one in every 10 registered Haines voters turned out to cast their ballots in Tuesday’s statewide primary election, but those who did reflected trends supporting incumbents Republican Don Young for U.S. Representative and Republican Lisa Murkowski for U.S. Senator.

About 82 percent of voters casting a Republican ballot chose Murkowski, while 75 percent liked Young.

Nearly 21 percent of registered Klukwan voters came to the polls, also largely supporting Young (75 percent) and Murkowski (86 percent).

Of Haines voters casting Democratic/Libertarian ballots, 58 percent liked Democrat Ray Metcalfe, a former Republican in the Alaska House of Representatives, for U.S. Senator. About 47 percent supported former Alaska Public Media general manager Steve Lindbeck for U.S. Representative.

Statewide, Metcalfe won the Democratic nomination and will oppose Murkowski for the U.S. Senate seat this November. Lindbeck also won statewide and will face Young.

Klukwan Democrats bucked the statewide trend and liked Edgar Blatchford (56 percent) for U.S. Senator and Lynette Hinz (33 percent) for U.S. Representative.

Incumbent House Rep. Sam Kito III, D-Juneau, was unopposed in the primary. He received 100 percent of the vote in Haines and Klukwan.
