Firefighters douse the remains of a woodshed that caught fire just before noon Friday, July 29, at a Beach Road cabin owned by Eric Mohr. Steve Zyski and brother Roman Mohr were home when the fire started and Zyski suffered arm burns fighting the blaze. A fire later in the day destroyed a sauna in the subdivision near the Mount Riley trailhead. On Monday, firefighters responded to two fires: One that spread from a campfire in the woods near Lutak Bridge and one in the Cathedral View subdivision that spread from a controlled burn. Haines Borough Fire Chief Greg Palmieri said recent rains haven’t been heavy enough to penetrate surface soils. Mid-July to mid-August is the period of highest fire danger, he said. He urged controlled burn permittees to read the documents, including precautions about wind and equipment required to have on hand.
