A fire of unknown origin gutted the interior of an abandoned home on Second Avenue owned by the Layton Bennett family. The home had several previous owners but most recently came to be known as “The Swamp” when it was a crash pad for young airline pilots working for L.A.B. Flying Service. The house, still standing after the fire but in danger of collapse, will be demolished, said Greg Palmieri, chief of the Haines Volunteer Fire Department. Marty Fowler photo.
