I’m hoping the Haines Borough Assembly will rectify a shoddy, demonstrably flawed borough manager selection process by facilitating the coming public “reception” with the finalists for a paltry one-hour. Specifically, the following would be helpful in showing good faith:
1. Change the event to a forum (instead of a reception); trivializing government business wastes taxpayers’ investment as well as citizens’ participation.
2. Hand out copies of completed application materials submitted by each finalist.
3. Structure the meeting such that citizens are afforded reasonable time for questions–and each candidate disciplined to reasonable time limits for answers/responses.
4. Restrain all incumbent borough officials, elected and appointed, from commenting and/or injecting themselves into the public exchange. Similarly, confine the consultant’s role to observation only.
5. Make available a matrixed score sheet for any citizen who wishes to evaluate the candidates.
