Lindsey Moore and Sam Edwards were married April 10 at a friend’s home in Seattle. Lindsey’s parents Ruth and Rich Moore attended, as did her grandfather Dick Moore and brother Devin Moore. On Sam’s side of the family, mother Mary Lynn, stepfather Monty Smith and sister Helen Edwards attended. Sam’s sister Jessica Edwards, her husband Andy Hedden and their daughter Sophia participated via “FaceTime.” Sam and Lindsey are returning to Haines next week to work at Glacier Point. They are moving to Bulgaria in the fall for Lindsey to start an elementary school counseling job at the Anglo-American School of Sofia. The couple is planning a simple celebration this summer and a formal wedding ceremony and reception in 2017.
John Schnabel’s Celebration of Life at Harriett Hall on April 2 drew friends and family from around the country. Daughter Sandra Schnabel of Oakland, Calif., came up for the event, as did Schnabel’s niece and nephew Bette and Ed Witt of Oak Harbor, Wash., nephew Robert Schnabel and Robert’s son Anthony of Boise, Idaho, and grandsons Parker Schnabel and Payson Schnabel. Other attendees included Jules Clinch of Everett, Wash., Fred Hosford, Tom and Judy Hall, Ken Shick, Diane Kaplan, Mel Sather and John Buhn. The Fishpickers performed, Heather Lende read a eulogy, and Doris Bell provided the flowers. The celebration included a group sing-a-long of “Ring of Fire” and “On the Road Again.”
Jila Stuart and daughter Willa spent a week in Hawaii snorkeling, body surfing and hiking in Volcano National Park. They met up with Jila’s sister Shirin Handjani of San Diego, Calif., and Shirin’s husband Doug and children Jason and Jasmine.
Residents and friends made a 21-day raft trip down the Colorado River last month. The group of 13 put in at Lee’s Ferry and ended at Diamond Creek, said Alison Jacobson, who got the permit for the trip. Alison’s husband Glen, daughter Anna and son Ketch were in on the trip from the beginning, while daughter Libby hiked in to Phantom Ranch with Jon Hirsh and his daughter Rio Ross-Hirsh to join halfway through. Chris Miller and sons Isak and Arik also paddled the whole way, with Chris in a hardshell kayak and Isak in a ducky. Highlights included beautiful scenery, long hikes and gorgeous weather, Alison said.
Rhys Williams recently returned from a three-week trip to Southern California, where he spent time with family and had eye surgery. Rhys visited brother Scott Williams in Rightwood, Calif., and son Ian Williams in Marina del Rey, Calif. Rhys also spent time in Oxnard, Calif., with son Zac Williams, daughter-in-law Zoey, and grandchildren Aidan Rose and Austin Mae. The trip’s highlight was undergoing double cataract eye surgery performed by Dr. Michael Colvard, who also used a cutting-edge laser technology to fix Rhys’ astigmatism.
Business owner Chris Thorgesen is looking for image ideas for a mural he will be putting up on the Coliseum Building, soon to be opening as Frontier Tradesmen. Haines High School graduate Tyler Swinton received Cascade Conference Player of the Week honors recently for his performance on the Oregon Tech men’s golf team. Swinton led the team to its first Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season title at the Corban Invite. Swinton finished third at the competition. Swinton, a senior at Oregon Tech, is leading the team in a record-breaking season.

Haines High School graduate Zak Little is in Townsville, Australia, working with Youth With A Mission for the second time. YWAM is an international Christian missionary organization committed to setting up mission and outreach programs worldwide. Little has been there about six months, coordinating housing at the organization’s base. He is also working in Youth Street, a youth ministry, and teaching people how to play baseball.
Joe Ordonez wrapped up his mini-book tour of the Pacific Northwest earlier this week with a stop at Village Books in Bellingham, Wash., on Monday. Ordonez was promoting the recent release of “Where Eagles Gather: The Story of the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.” Ordonez also made stops in Sitka at the Sitka Public Library and Anacortes, Wash., at the Anacortes Public Library.
