Port Chilkoot Distillery brought home awards for two spirits in the American Distilling Institute’s 10th Annual Craft Spirits competition held last week in San Diego.

The Haines-based company’s Green Siren absinthe won best in the absinthe category and a silver medal among all craft spirits. Port Chilkoot bourbon won a bronze medal. More than 400 awards were announced.

The American Distilling Institute is a national trade organization for certified craft distillers. The judging drew entries from more than 1,000 craft distilleries across the U.S. and Canada.

“This was the first competition we’ve entered these spirits in, so it was exciting to see them do so well,” said Heather Shade, co-owner of Port Chilkoot Distillery.

“We are releasing our bourbon one barrel at a time, as it is ready,” Shade said.

Co-owner Sean Copeland said the distillery’s bourbon and absinthe are the only such spirits made in Alaska.
