Maggie Rae Martin is selling three of the turkeys that have been making mischief around town. Maggie said her family keeps all kinds of birds – ducks, chickens and turkeys – that roam freely at their Beach Road property. The females are trying to nest and have been wandering away from home, and the males have been following them around, Martin said. The fowl have been spotted mating near the Chilkat Center, blocking roadways and wandering through yards. Martin said the turkeys are confined for the time being.
Haines School math and science teacher Patty Brown returned from a jam-packed spring break, which started with a trip to Crescent City, Calif., to visit sister Jennifer Brown and niece Time Leon. In Crescent City, Patty ran a 5K in the “2016 Tsunami Fun Run,” where runners had to dodge obstacles like fishing nets and vehicles. The run raises awareness of the importance of getting to higher ground during a tsunami. Patty continued her trip in Portland, Ore., meeting up with friend David Foster of Grand Junction, Colo., to attend a Bruce Springsteen concert. The two also hiked in California’s Anza-Borrego State Park. The trip included a stop in Borrego Springs to visit Jeanie Johnstone, a paleontologist and former Haines resident.
Musher Heidi Sutter came to Haines to visit Jillian Rogers last week. Sutter completed her first Iditarod last year, finishing 48th. She is from Christochina and is a special education teacher at Kenny Lake School. The two friends drank green beer at a local bar for St. Patrick’s Day and explored the town. Heidi and friend Tim Fairbanks missed their flight back to Skagway, where Tim lives. They were lollygagging at the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve.
Tyler Andrew Eggen and Joyce Roberta are engaged to be married July 9 in Anchorage. Eggen attended school in Haines from kindergarten through junior year of high school, graduating from Sitka High School in 2003. His parents are Andrew and Kathryn Eggen of Sitka. Tyler is the assistant director of campus life at Alaska Pacific University, and Joyce works as a mental health therapist at Providence Alaska Medical Center. The couple lives in Anchorage.
An essay written by former Haines resident Andrew Friske nearly two decades ago was featured in the program for last week’s 70th Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament. Friske wrote the essay, “A Look Back on Gold Medal,” for his Native American Studies class in December of 1999 while studying at Carroll College in Montana. The article features quotes from Stuart DeWitt, then a college student at Adams State in Colorado, Terry Friske and Albert Kookesh.
Heather Shade, Sean Copeland and dog Ozzie are featured in a full-page photo in this month’s issue of Nature Conservancy magazine. The photo shows the couple and pup in the back of Sean’s flat-bed truck with several whiskey barrels, looking out from Picture Point. The photo’s caption mentions Shade and Copeland’s Port Chilkoot Distillery company, which uses local herbs to flavor its liquor.
Carol Tuynman returned last week from a month-long trip through the eastern United States. In New York City, she visited her daughter Anna Fader, son-in-law Ed Eigerman and grandchildren Amelia and James. She helped the family move from Wall Street to Spanish Harlem, and attended the American Folk Art Museum’s exhibit “Mystery and Benevolence: Masonic and Odd Fellows Folk Art.” Tuynman then flew to Asheville, N.C., to spend time with daughter Emily Fader, son-in-law Michael Garguilo and 2-year-old grandson Arthur, who demonstrated his breakdancing skills for his grandmother. Tuynman rounded out her trip with a stop in Beaufort, S.C., where she dined out with old friends and toured the Biltmore Estate.
Haines High School alum Alisha Young met up with fellow alumni at various spots around Europe. Young visited with Isobel Smith and former Haines High School foreign exchange student Reik Fischer in Berlin, Germany, and met up with Rebekah Green in Santorini, Greece. Young is studying at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, England. Rebekah is studying in Granada, Spain, and Isobel is studying in Glasgow, Scotland.
Karen Garcia returned to Haines on Sunday after a weeklong trip to Disney World in Orlando, Fla., with parents Judy and Luis Garcia, sister Tara Garcia and brother Bryant Garcia. Bryant flew in from San Carlos, Calif., where he is a PhD student in physics at Stanford University, and the rest of the Garcias arrived from Chicago, Ill. Highlights included dining in Cinderella’s castle, sitting by the pool sipping mango margaritas and exploring new rides, including the “Star Tours” motion simulator attraction at Hollywood Studios, which has been updated with scenes and characters from the new film “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
