Haines High School’s varsity basketball teams ended their seasons with losses at the Region V tournament in Sitka last week.
The Haines girls opened with a 41-32 loss to Metlakatla on March 9. Senior Kayley Swinton scored 10 points and senior Destinee Cowart added 8.
The Glacier Bears defeated Wrangell, 50-40, the following day. Swinton scored 17 points, sophomore Makayla Crager, 10; senior Autumn Gross and junior Jordan Stigen, 6; Cowart, 5; sophomore Brittney Bradford, 3; senior Jenae Larson, 2; and sophomore Tulsi Zahnow, 1.
Haines failed to hold off Craig in the third game, 45-42. Petersburg and Craig ended up qualifying for state from Southeast for Class 2A.
Swinton poured in 20 points in her final game. Cowart tossed in 8 points, Larson, 7; Bradford, 5; and Crager, 2.
Swinton earned all-conference honors, and coach Greg Brittenham noted Cowart was a near miss for recognition. “Almost half her games were double-doubles.”
Petersburg and Wrangell advanced to state in the boys’ bracket.
The Glacier Bear boys lost to Craig, 68-58, on March 9, and then to Wrangell, 65-37, on March 10.
Senior Trevor Cox scored 22 points against Craig. Other scoring for Haines included sophomore Hudson Sage, 12; sophomore Dylan Swinton, 8; junior Jacob Stigen, 7; senior Matthew Green, 5; and junior Dylan Palmieri and sophomore Marty Fowler, 2; according to statistics reported on KHNS.
Cox, an all-conference selection, poured in 21 points vs. Wrangell, Swinton, 12; and Palmieri and Sage, 2.
All-academic honorees for Haines seniors were Cox, Green, Cowart, Gross, Larson and Swinton; cheerleader Bailey Stuart; and Casey Bradford and Kai Hays from the pep band. Great Sport awards went to Cox, Green, Gross and Larson.
