Haines school board members will get their first look at a draft budget for the coming year at a committee meeting set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the high school social studies room.
The board’s finance committee includes Brian Clay, Lisa Schwartz and Mike Wilson. The budget schedule includes preparing a working draft for the Haines Borough by April 1 and formal adoption in May.
The district is seeking the same borough contribution as last year, about $1.77 million. That includes a $1.56 million general fund contribution and an additional $210,000 for Community Education, school meals, activities and snowplowing. The district’s general fund budget is about $5 million.
The school board will hold a joint meeting with the Haines Borough Assembly April 27. The budget is scheduled to be adopted May 10.
The board on Tuesday approved a schedule for the coming year with classes starting Aug. 23 and ending Dec. 16 for the holiday break. Classes would resume Jan. 3 and end May 25, with spring break falling March 20-24.
The schedule also sets Wednesday, Nov. 23, as a vacation day, creating a five-day break for Thanksgiving. The five-day Thanksgiving was instituted this year at the request of families who like to travel over the holiday, said district secretary Ashley Sage.
