Five Haines High School wrestlers qualified for this weekend’s state tournament in Anchorage, a record-setting total for coach Dennis Durr.

“This is the biggest team I’ve ever brought there,” Durr said.

The wrestling program was revived at the school about eight years ago.

Top-four finishers in each weight class at last weekend’s regional competition in Petersburg earned state berths. The Glacier Bears were led by runners-up Cameron Bauer, a 126-pound sophomore; and Zane Durr, a senior at 152 pounds.

Other state qualifiers included junior Charlie Bower, third place at 126 pounds; senior Kai Hays, fourth at 160 pounds; and freshman Kamakana Kanahele, fourth at 220 pounds.

Bower is making his second trip to the state championship in three years. He moved up from his usual weight of 120 pounds.

Bower topped wrestlers from Craig, Mount Edgecumbe and Sitka and notched two pins. He said he “had no idea” going into regionals how he would do, but he’s expecting some bigger challenges this weekend.

“We’ll face harder kids,” Bower said. “It will be the top four (wrestlers) at every weight class from every region of the state.”

Both 126-pound Glacier Bears lost to Ian Jenson of Wrangell, who has a 24-6 record on the season. Bauer’s record is 15-7 and Bower is 13-9. The pair from the same school, in the same weight class, and with identical-sounding last names potentially could face off at state.

“This is the first time we’ve had two guys (qualify) in one class,” Durr said.

Senior Zane Durr won twice at 152 pounds before losing 4-0 to Craig grappler Wyatt Patten, who boasts a 28-2 record. Durr has a 15-9 mark this year and is a three-time state qualifier.

The 160-pound Hays competed at state as a sophomore, and his fourth-place performance last weekend earned him a repeat trip. He lost his first match and then picked up three consecutive victories, two by pin and one by decision, before falling in the third-place bout.

The freshman Kanahele was the final state qualifier for the Glacier Bears, topping a Petersburg opponent at 220 pounds to secure fourth place.

Junior Ketch Jacobson was among the near-misses for Haines, finishing fifth at 132 pounds. Jacobson posted a 2-2 record at the regional competition, winning by fall and major decision.

Other grapplers for Haines included senior Trevor Cox, 1-2 at 138 pounds; junior Mori Hays, 0-2 at 145 pounds; and senior Tyler Murphy, 0-3 at 182 pounds.

Overall, the Glacier Bears placed seventh as a team, trailing Craig, Mount Edgecumbe, Wrangell, Petersburg, Sitka and Metlakatla. Haines bested Hydaburg, Thorne Bay, Hoonah, Kake, Klawock, Pelican and Yakutat.

Coach Durr said he was happy to have more than half his team qualify for state, but had been hopeful for an even higher total.

“Best-case scenario: maybe we bring the whole team,” he said.
