The Haines Borough School District last week unanimously approved a contract addendum with interim superintendent Rich Carlson that will pay him $46,379 to work from Feb. 1 to June 30.
Keeping Carlson on the job required approval by the state Division of Retirement and Benefits, as Carlson is a retired superintendent and conditions of his state retirement limit how much he can work in an interim capacity.
The district is seeking a new superintendent and has extended until Jan. 29 an initial December deadline to apply for the job.
“I think Rich has done a great job for us thus far. We’re extremely lucky we’ve found someone of Rich’s caliber, with his leadership skills and expertise, who can jump in at the last minute and keep us moving forward… I’ve really appreciated working with him and learning from him,” school board president Anne Marie Palmieri said.
Carlson, who previously worked in Cordova and Klawock, started working for the district in August.
