The Haines Ministerial Association is sponsoring the annual Community Thanksgiving celebration, 1-3 p.m. Thanksgiving Day at the Haines School cafeteria.

All are welcome at the free meal and churches are each bringing a main course, said Jane Cowart of the Salvation Army. Between 75 and 100 people attended last year’s event.

“It’s come as you are and people can expect all the traditional Thanksgiving food: turkey and ham, gravy, potatoes and all the side dishes,” Cowart said. Those who attend may bring a side dish if they choose to. “It’s not a requirement.”

“This is for the entire community. We don’t want anybody lonely or staying at home that can’t afford to cook a meal,” Cowart said.

Families who decide they just don’t want to cook are welcome too, she said. “It doesn’t matter if you can cook 100 meals, if you’d like to be part of it and have a meal, you’re welcome.”

People who are interested in helping should contact ministerial association president Wayne Cowart at 766-3109 or 766-2126.

A free Thanksgiving meal for the public has been a local tradition for more than a decade.
