– Shane Horton, right, leader of the Haines Hot Shots student shooting club, talks about the group at Thursday’s presentation of grants by the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation at the library. The club received $1,000 in operational support from the local foundation. Horton, flanked by shooters Joseph Rossman and Dawson and Caleb Holm, explained that club members offer service work in appreciation for community support they receive. At Thursday’s event, foundation officials distributed checks totaling $18,000 to 14 nonprofits. The foundation has until Jan. 1 to raise about $7,500 in order to receive matching money from Alaska’s philanthropic Rasmuson Foundation. The local foundation already has raised about $27,500 toward Rasmuson’s offer of $35,000 total in matching funds. Checks in the name of the local foundation should be mailed to P.O. Box 1117, Haines. The foundation has made more than $75,000 in local grants to date.
