Sailor Jane Morris was born at 10:21 a.m. Nov. 1 at the Bellingham Birth Center to parents Lesley Rostron and Colin Morris. Rostron is a Haines High School graduate. Sailor weighed five pounds, 11 ounces. Lesley’s sister Haley Gardner, parents Lisa and Mike Rostron and Colin’s mother Margaret Morris were present for the birth. Colin’s father John Morris couldn’t make it due to work in California. Lesley, Colin and Sailor live in Bellingham, Wash.
Presbyterian Church pastor Ron Horn said the church has established a fund to help the Mackowiak family following last week’s plane crash. Checks can be made out to the Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 264, Haines, AK 99827, with a note designating the Mackowiak family fund. “They are so grateful to have people praying for them and offering support and love,” Ron said.
Siblings Nora Krake, Eileen James, Margaret Turnbull, Kathy Enright and Mikey Enright traveled to Ireland to see where their father Michael Enright was born. In addition to spending time in Dublin, they went to Ballybunion, where they visited distant cousins and saw the schoolhouse their father attended. They saw castles, old ruins and the Cliffs of Moher, and met up with niece Angeline Ebnet, who is finishing her last semester at Trinity College. In Dublin, Angelina approached a woman wearing XtraTuf boots and asked if she was from Alaska. The woman turned out to be from Sitka and is a relative of Haines resident Lee Roberts.
Jim Stanford recently returned from having his right hip replaced at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, Ore. Stanford’s surgeon was Alec Denes, an orthopedic sports medicine doctor who works with the U.S. Olympic ski and snowboard teams. Stanford recovered from the surgery for a week in Beaverton, Ore., where he stayed with Ben Jones. Stanford said his hip problems stemmed from pedaling on his dog sled with the same leg for 25 years.
Haines residents Darsie Culbeck and Greg Goodman both weathered Hurricane Patricia’s landing in Mexico at the end of October. Darsie, who was in Sayulita, Mexico, said he and wife Courtney and sons Griffin and Carver stayed with a friend whose home was on higher ground, where they barricaded the windows and hunkered down in the bathroom. Greg, whose house is in Perula, Mexico, went to San Mateo for a couple nights to ride out the storm. When he returned, he discovered the 150 mph winds had ripped 500 Spanish roofing tiles from his porch and carport.
Brian Staurseth’s wildlife photography is on display at First National Bank until the end of November. Staurseth moved to Haines full-time in March. He has a professional studio at his home near 31 Mile Haines Highway.
Seven shooters from the Haines Hot Shots youth target shooting team traveled with coach Tim Holm to Juneau over the weekend for the Juneau Trap Team’s inaugural Fall Shoot Invitational at the Juneau Gun Club. Novice Dawson Holm took first in trap, first in wobble trap and first in double trap. Junior Joseph Rossman took first in trap and second in double trap. Junior Logan Tonsgard took second place in wobble trap. Corbin Holm, Caleb Holm, Nathan Haas and Dylan Hayes also competed.
Swiss biologist Eric Vimercati gave a presentation Sunday on the predation patterns of the Eurasian lynx in the Swiss Alps and Jura Mountains. The lynx prey on roe deer fawns and chamois kids. About 20 people attended the presentation at the library. Vimercati is currently working in the Yukon studying Canadian lynx. Sandy Barclay hosted a vegan potluck dinner for Vimercati at her Mud Bay home Saturday.
Krista Kielsmeier recently returned from a whirlwind trip that included stops in New York and Texas, as well as a cross-country road trip from Iowa to Bellingham, Wash. Krista went to New York City with former college roommate Jennie Kessler and Jennie’s husband Geremias Pinel to visit friend Dr. Wendy Gu. Krista then headed to Houston, Texas, for the wedding of high school classmate Sarah Barfels and John Lowitzer. Krista drove from Iowa to Bellingham with father Jerry Kielsmeier, with overnights in Sturgis, S.D, and Missoula, Mont.
Robert and Marta Venables are moving to Juneau for the winter so Robert can be closer to his job. Venables is the energy coordinator for Southeast Conference. The couple’s daughter Melanie Chamberlain also lives in Juneau. Robert said he won’t re-apply for his seat on the Haines Borough Planning Commission, which expires this month.
