Haines High School placed sixth out of 13 teams at last weekend’s Brandon Pilot Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Juneau, topping Mount Edgecumbe and Juneau-Douglas.
The Glacier Bears also finished ahead of Thorne Bay, Metlakatla, Hydaburg, Pelican and Kake. Haines trailed tournament champion Ketchikan, host Thunder Mountain, Wrangell, Sitka and Craig.
“It’s one of the stronger teams we’ve had, as a full team,” said coach Dennis Durr.
Sophomore Cameron Bauer won the 126-pound title with a 10-2 major decision over a Ketchikan wrestler.
“It was the first tournament I have won in high school,” Bauer said. “I was pretty stoked to pull it off.”
Bauer went 2-0 at the competition, and improved on a second-place finish at a Wrangell event the previous week.
“I couldn’t have done it without my coaches Dennis and Andrew (Cardella),” he said. “They are great coaches and very supportive.”
Haines had three other place-winners in Juneau: senior Tyler Murphy, third at 195 pounds; junior Charlie Bower, fourth at 120 pounds; and senior Zane Durr, fourth at 152 pounds.
Junior Ketch Jacobson went 3-2 at 132 pounds; senior Trevor Cox, 2-2 at 138 pounds; and senior Kai Hays, 2-2 at 160 pounds, but did not place. Freshman Kamakana Kanahele was 0-2 at 220 pounds.
Haines next will compete at a Ketchikan meet this weekend.
