Kinsley Hope Alsup was born 8:14 a.m. July 7 at Juneau’s Bartlett Regional Hospital to parents Athena and Jesse Alsup. Kinsley weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces, and measured 21.5 inches. Big brother is Waylon Alsup, 4. Grandparents are Ron and Laurie Alsup, and Inez and Dave Gross. Inez was present for the birth.
Teena Scovill and Doug Larson were married Sunday at Doug’s Oslund Drive house. Doug’s cousin Tisha Kennell of North Pole officiated. Parents of the groom are Diana Kuest of Anchorage and Robert Larson of Juneau. Parents of the bride are Virginia Scovill and the late Louis Scovill. Sons Lowell, Nathan, and Jacob Narum walked Teena down the aisle. Daughter Danielle Livengood of Delta Junction was matron of honor. Doug’s best man was son Jeremy Larson of Fairbanks. Flower girls were Teena’s grandchildren Jesse Narum and Olivia Livengood, and Doug’s nieces Mia and Ayla Markiewicz. The ring bearer was Teena’s grandson Isaac Livengood. Those in attendance also included Doug’s daughter Jenae Larson, Teena’s brother Timothy Scovill, his wife Betty, and daughter Anni of Michigan, Doug’s sister Katie Markiewicz and husband Rafal of Anchorage, and Doug’s cousin Ola Rudy of Norway. Teena’s boss Carl Uchytil and wife Maria of Juneau also made the trip. The reception, held at the Letnikof Cove pavilion, included picnic foods and carrot, chocolate, lemon, gluten-free, and white wedding cakes. Nancy Nash played piano at the ceremony and the reception. Teena’s niece Lindsey Jobbins sang and Lindsey’s sister Natalie Jobbins took photographs. The newlyweds are planning a caribou hunt honeymoon outside of Delta Junction. Teena works for Juneau Docks and Harbors, and Doug works at Greens Creek Mine.
About 25 hikers partook in the third annual Mount Ripinsky community hike July 5, said Paul Swift. Paul and the Friday Hikers Club organized the outing. Nearly everyone reached the top. Hikers waded in the mountain’s lake, and enjoyed seeing the many wildflowers surrounding the trail.
Greta Mart is an interim reporter at KHNS. Greta, who arrived in Haines at the end of June, is working for the public station through the summer. In May, she received her master’s degree from the University of California Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. At KHNS, Greta is reporting as well as hosting the Lynn Canal morning program and the evening news. She works with reporter Emily Files.
Former resident Lucas Dawson of North Pole was in town recently with wife Elyse and 1-year-old daughter Eden. Father Jon Dawson, now living in Arizona, traveled with the family. Jon is a former owner of Fort Seward Lodge. The family dropped Jon off to go commercial fishing for a month with Gary Graham. Lucas said Jon missed the ocean. Lucas was excited to see old friends and show Elyse his “old stomping grounds.”
Haines softball players have been busy lately. A Haines team competed in the three-day Fourth of July co-ed softball tournament in Skagway. It included Kyle Rush, Adrian Nash, Tom Ward, Jeff Wackerman, Michael Ganey, Daniel Klanott, Sarah Elliott, Alissa Henry, Tracey Harmon, Anna Jacobson, Casandra Smith, and Jeanine Ward. Daniel said 13 teams competed. Other teams were from Whitehorse and Skagway. The Haines team placed fifth in its bracket. Last weekend, Daniel, Tim Thomas, and Jesse McGraw played in the Dustball softball tournament in Whitehorse, Y.T. Daniel and Tim played on a Gustavus team, and Jesse played on a Juneau team.
Krista Kielsmeier and Karen Garcia made a road trip to Whitehorse, Y.T., where Krista tallied a 5-0 record at last weekend’s Capital Cup tennis competition. Krista competed for the Juneau team in the annual Juneau vs. Whitehorse event. Former resident Matt Jones of Juneau also competed, and brought along golf professional Niall Hackett, who cheered on the competitors. Krista, a former high school tennis state qualifier in Iowa, prepared for the event by setting up a net at the covered basketball court at the Haines School. Whitehorse won the event by a narrow margin.
The Southeast Alaska State Fair is seeking volunteers for its climbing tower work party July 16-20. Volunteer if you’re handy or if you just want to help. The fair hopes to have the 30-foot climbing tower ready by fair time. Contact Jessica Kayser Forster at 314-3257.
