Photographers have a chance to win a ribbon for Best Selfie, gluten-free bakers can enter their favorite cookie recipe and wearable art creators can enter their best outfits from upcycled or recycled materials at the 2015 Southeast Alaska State Fair.

Those are some of the changes to the exhibits competition at this year’s fair, set for July 30-Aug. 2.

Most exhibits are due at the fairgrounds by 1 p.m. Saturday, July 25. The deadline for crops, flowers, and baked goods is 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 29.

“A huge, ground-up, reworking of the exhibit guidelines has taken place over the winter, and the result is an updated system that makes the Southeast Alaska State Fair the leading edge fair in the state for our new innovative and accessible exhibit system,” said fair exhibits manager Deana Stout.

Over the last year, staff and volunteers have gone through the guidelines for the exhibits department by department and class by class to revamp and update the entire program in hopes of making it easier to enter, easier to judge, and a lot more fun for people from all walks of life, Stout said.

The guidelines are also moving toward the modern age by being available in their entirety online, as the fair moves toward using less paper and continuing its mission to be more environmentally friendly.

For more information on exhibits, read exhibitor guides distributed around town, visit the fair website or contact Stout at 766-2476 or [email protected].

Stout said she wanted to emphasize framed art in any department must be securely or correctly mounted according to the instructions in the exhibitor guide.

Winning exhibits, including department and division champs, qualify for free shipping to be judged and exhibited at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer.

The fair also is looking for a few volunteers July 21 to help check in, organize and display exhibits.
