This year Big Brothers Big Sisters is promoting its programs more frequently in the Chilkat Valley News and on KHNS. Our print media sponsors to date are Howsers IGA and Constantine Metal Resources. Yearlong media on KHNS is underwritten by the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation. Haines BBBS is grateful to these supporters who are helping to strengthen the lives of Haines kids.
Among the consistent challenges faced by many BBBS programs is enrolling enough men to serve the pool of boys who seek a Big Brother. We hope that readers (and listeners) don’t interpret our message “Big Brothers Needed” to mean that Big Sisters aren’t also needed, or that boys shouldn’t enroll. Having ample numbers of volunteers of both genders allows BBBS to make better matches. Location is also important; an easy commute is a normal match requirement and our waiting list includes boys who live up the Haines Highway. Finding new Haines Highway volunteers is a particular need.
The community is invited to our annual picnic at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, June 27 on the lawn near Harriett Hall (or under Payson’s Pavilion for wet weather). We’ll provide chili and cornbread and a potluck dish is welcome. To assist with our media project, picnic plans or learn about ways to be involved, call 766-2151.
