Many thanks go out to Haines and Klukwan for coming out full force for the film screening of “Tracing Roots: A Weaver’s Journey” with filmmaker Ellen Frankenstein and Haida master weaver Delores Churchill. This special event could not have happened without the support of local organizations, and the Haines Borough Public Library would like to thank the Chilkoot Indian Association, the Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp #5, the Friends of the Haines Borough Public Library, and the Klukwan Library. The Alaska Native Knowledge Network demonstrates an iceberg analogy for culture, with surface culture as easily recognizable from the outside, and deep culture that is found beneath the surface. The lifeways of indigenous peoples, like Tlingit and Haida, promote significant perspectives, and we got a chance to experience that deeper way of thinking through beloved elder Delores Churchill and Ellen Frankenstein’s film, “Tracing Roots.” Gunalchéesh, North Tide Canoe Ḵwáan, for honoring Delores Churchill as a fellow member and showing her Haines from the bay in a traditional dugout canoe. Many safe journeys to all.
