Chilkat Valley Preschool board members will meet during a finance committee meeting May 28 and discuss what will come of about $100,000 the group holds that was to be used for a new home for the school.
The privately-operated preschool was expecting to have to buy a building until about a month ago, when Haines Borough School District officials stepped forward with an offer to use interior space at the Haines School.
Preschool board chair Alissa Henry said she has heard from some individuals wanting to know about the fate of the money.
“That’s what specifically we raised money for, so we know that’s a concern,” Henry said. “We’re not going to let it dwindle away in general spending. We want to come up with a good plan.”
Most people don’t seem concerned, Henry said. “They trust we’ll use (the money) in a good way,” Henry said.
Henry said some of the $100,000 predates the group’s efforts to raise money for a new site, and some was also from general fundraising.
Also, the preschool will have some expenses even in the Haines School, including classroom cabinetry, possibly required playground improvements, and office rent. The school also may need a new building at some point, she said.
(The Haines Borough School District’s offer to use the building comes on the condition that the arrangement may be terminated if the school’s need for space expands.)
As for tracking donations, preschool officials know the sources of large donations, including a few that exceeded $10,000.
Henry said the school expects to issue a press release on the matter after the May 28 meeting.
