And then there were two.
As of this week, Haines Borough police officers Joshua Dryden and Jeremy Groves are the only two members of the police staff who haven’t resigned.
Officer Jason Rettinger submitted his resignation Tuesday and will be moving to Jauneau, manager David Sosa said.
The five-officer department was already operating with only four officers.
Outgoing police chief Bill Musser said Rettinger was pursuing opportunities elsewhere because of “family needs.” “He’s looking to be a little bit closer to where he needs to be to take care of family issues,” Musser said.
Sosa said the department has some officer applications on file that Musser will be looking at to see if those individuals are available.
Dryden started on the job in March 2014. He is currently at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Academy and won’t return until mid-May.
Groves started in November.
Rettinger is the most recent in a string of resignations at the department in less than a year: chief Musser in March, officer Adam Patterson in January and Sgt. Simon Ford in July.
Sosa’s proposed budget for next year calls for a freeze on the hire of a fifth officer.
